A black and white photo of one of the charismatic hoodoos of Grand Staircase Escalante.

Toadstool Hoodoo

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Utah

Behind the Lens: After a morning filled with photographing Bryce Canyon, my wife and I decided to take a drive down to Page to see Horseshoe Bend. That was a madhouse but still enjoyable to visit. While heading back to our hotel in Kanab, I decided to stop at a trailhead that I found before the trip. The sun was getting lower in the sky but the heat of the desert hadn’t diminished yet as we made our way back to the hoodoos. This central hoodoo was definitely the star of the show. I searched for compositions but ultimately settled on this one. I like the wide angle look near the base that shows all the intimate details and the true majesty of the hoodoo.
