Mount Rainier National Park, Washington
Behind the Lens: Bench Lake is my personal favorite place to photograph Mount Rainier. The lake every time I’ve hiked to it is calm and holds a perfect reflection. On this occasion I had to wait for my shot though. I hiked up to the lake in the dark so I could take in sunrise. When I got to the trailhead the sky was clear and it looked like I’d get a decent sunrise. I got to the lake, set up my tripod and camera. That’s when it happened. Thick fog rolled in, I couldn’t see the trees on the other side of the lake. Sunrise was ruined but after a couple hours, the fog burned off and I captured this image of Mount Rainier with a fresh coat of snow.
