A black and white panoramic photo overlooking Lake Crescent during a rain storm. Fog weaves in and out of the mountains surrounding the lake.

Olympic Rains

Olympic National Park, Washington

Behind the Lens: The rain was unrelenting as I drove back to my hotel in Port Angeles from the Hoh Rainforest. I was already soaked from a day of hiking in the rain and just wanted to get warm. As I got to Lake Crescent I saw the fog building on the mountains. I knew I needed to find a spot to capture the scene. I pulled into a few overlooks but none of them were what I wanted. I went a little further and noticed a small pulloff where I could scramble down to the shore to get a shot. I made my way down the bank and set up the shot. Trying to protect my lens from the rain, I took this shot and felt relieved I got to experience and capture this beautiful moment along the lake.
