A pika carrying grass to his rock home to dry it out for the coming winter on Mount Saint Helens.

Making Hay

Mount Saint Helens, Washington

Behind the Lens: While visiting the Mount Saint Helens area, I came across an unexpected area of pikas. There were also ton of chipmunks playing in the rocks as well. I must have sat there for two hours just watching and photographing all the wildlife. There was one pika that kept running across the rocks and gnawed on the grasses. The pika would always take a different path back and would dip into the rocks at different points which made photographing the pika difficult. I was able to come away with many images of the pika with “hay” in its mouth with this one being my favorite.
